Sustainable Software, can you do something?
Cloud Native Sustainability Week is being celebrated around the world with both online and offline events.
“Cloud Native Sustainability Week is a global event where the CNCF community organizes local meetings around the theme of Cloud Native Sustainability. The Cloud Native Sustainability Week will take place at the first week of October 2024.“
I am the TAG ENV lead, and I got involved with a clear purpose. Being part of the TAG allows me to contribute to building a sustainable software ecosystem, separate from the political aspects. You can get involved too! At Kubesimplify, we did a three-part series during the week, where we discussed the TAG itself, the working groups within it where you can contribute, and then shifted focus to specific technologies like WASM, sustainability, and how multi-tenancy with vCluster helps make Kubernetes more sustainable.
You can watch the playlist here.
So, if you want to get involved, be sure to watch these sessions, join the TAG, and explore the many existing projects you can contribute to and integrate into your current software ecosystem.
Saloni and I will be giving a talk on 'Cloud Native Sustainability Speedrun: Tools from Infrastructure to Application Level,' where we'll cover the latest tools in the landscape, from infrastructure to application level.
If you are coming to KubeCon NA then make sure to attend our talk.

This edition of the newsletter is brought to you by CastAI, and I would really like to thank them for sponsoring the time spent writing it. Crafting quality content takes time, and you should definitely check out CastAI if you're looking to reduce Kubernetes costs.
I added two new videos to the CKS preparation playlist

Kubernetes HPA - Is it good to be used as is? - In this article I share all about Kubernetes HPA with examples and loadtesting using K6, I also share my view on when this won’t be that much effective.
185 real-world gen AI use cases from the world's leading organizations - With 185 use cases now in production, businesses are seeing significant productivity improvements and modernized customer experiences through generative AI agents.
GPUs In Kubernetes: Installation And Configuration - This post explains the importance of GPU support for machine learning and AI workloads on Kubernetes, highlighting the role of GPUs in processing data and training models. It provides a step-by-step guide on how to install and configure Nvidia GPUs in Kubernetes clusters, either on-premises or through cloud services, using Nvidia drivers and operators to enable efficient GPU usage in workloads.
Leveraging Kubernetes virtual machines at Cloudflare with KubeVirt - Cloudflare utilizes KubeVirt to run virtual machines within their multi-tenant Kubernetes clusters, enabling secure and scalable workloads that require deep integration with the Linux kernel, such as development environments, build pipelines, and scalability testing. This integration allows Cloudflare to support both containerized and virtualized workloads on the same platform, improving efficiency while maintaining security and reducing operational complexity.
How do Kubernetes Operators Handle Concurrency? - Kubernetes operators built with Kubebuilder and controller-runtime process reconciliation requests sequentially by default, but concurrency can be introduced using the `MaxConcurrentReconciles` field to handle multiple requests simultaneously. Kubernetes’ workqueue ensures that even with concurrency, the same resource is not processed multiple times concurrently, maintaining thread safety and preventing race conditions without requiring additional locking mechanisms.
Introducing the Flux Operator - GitOps on Autopilot Mode - The Flux Operator, introduced by ControlPlane, automates the lifecycle management of Flux CD components, streamlining GitOps workflows for Kubernetes clusters by simplifying installation, configuration, and updates. It enhances multi-tenancy, scaling, and synchronization capabilities while providing seamless upgrades, monitoring, and OpenShift compatibility, making GitOps more accessible and efficient for organizations of all sizes.
